The following letter-form was brought about as a means of teaching my children the Word of God through the mail. And of course, quite naturally so, that’s the reason I begin these letters with "Dear Children" and end them with "Love Dad". So for the rest of you who participate in these weekly messages, please keep their original intended purpose in mind.
Dear Children,
I was feverishly working on our next sermonet – “The Making Of A Junkyard Dog: The Prophet!” – when the Lord abruptly changed directions. I mean if “Jimmy Swaggart: The Epitome Of Arrogance!” and “Jimmy Swaggart, Take Up YOUR CROSS And Follow Jesus!” weren’t enough already, then keep on reading. Because in today’s message – “Jimmy Swaggart: A Whore Is No Longer A Whore!” – we’re going to go a whole lot deeper into the depravity of Jimmy Swaggart the evangelist.
So where do we start? Well, how about Jimmy Swaggart’s tearful confession on the 21st of February 1988 after having been caught with prostitute #1: "I have sinned against you, my Lord." Jimmy Swaggart confessed, but true repentance was not to be forthcoming. Because it was less than four (4) years later – 11th of October 1991 – that Jimmy Swaggart was arrested for driving on the wrong side of the road in a red-light district of Indio, CA, with prostitute #2 as His passenger. And of course all of this – both prostitutes – came about because Jimmy Swaggart refused the godly counsel of the God-sent prophet David Wilkerson!
But moving right along, it was on the 28th of October 1991 – seventeen (17) days after prostitute #2 – that Time magazine ran an article entitled “Scandals: No Apologies This Time”. And the following is only a sample of what they had to say about what Jimmy Swaggart had to say about prostitute #2:
“The maxim "Once burned, twice shy" apparently doesn't mean much to televangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Disgraced in 1988 after a liaison with a Louisiana call girl, Swaggart, 56, was stopped by police in Indio, Calif., two weeks ago for a traffic violation and found to be in the company of Rosemary Garcia, an admitted streetwalker. That latest foray prompted Swaggart to resign from his Baton Rouge-based ministry last Tuesday to seek "professional counseling and medical care." But the next day the preacher reversed the decision, explaining to his congregation that God told him to return to the pulpit. Swaggart announced to supporters that "the Lord told me it's flat none of your business" and that he didn't have to apologize for his conduct.”
So what do you think about that? Sounded a lot like “Jimmy Swaggart: The Epitome Of Arrogance!” to me. I mean, after all:
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18 KJV)
Jimmy Swaggart’s dad, “Sun” Swaggart, was right on target when he said, “Jimmy’s lost his mind!” Because it was right about the time Jimmy Swqaggart made his remark about prostitute #2 – “the Lord told me it's flat none of your business” – that he totally and completely lost sight of what “godly repentance” is really all about:
“Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” (Isaiah 66:1-2 KJV)
So does Jimmy Swaggart have that “poor and contrite spirit”? Does he even “tremble at the Word of God” anymore? Well as you are about to see, Jimmy Swaggart will do whatever it takes to make sure that God’s Word doesn’t apply to him!
Because you see it was after prostitute #2 that Jimmy Swaggart took on a “god syndrome” like never before – he became “beyond reproach”. And the following excerpt from David Wilkerson’s 11/11/95 message – “The Marvelous Benefits of Repentance!” – describes that particular spirit in Jimmy Swaggart to a “T” [http://www.tscpulpitseries.org/english/1990s/ts951120.html] :
*******************************
…The longer I walk with Jesus, the more I am convinced repentance is not just for sinners, but also for believers. It is not simply a one-time thing, but something God's people are called to do until Jesus returns.
And I hope to show you that every Christian who maintains a repentant attitude brings upon his life God's special attention. Indeed, repentance opens up something to us that nothing else can. If we walk before the Lord with a repentant heart, we will be inundated with incredible blessings!
But for now, I want to tell you what I believe is absolutely necessary to obtaining a repentant heart. First of all, this type of heart is soft and pliable. It responds to and acts upon godly reproof. It is tender, easily molded by the Holy Spirit.
But the number-one characteristic of a repentant heart - its absolute foundation - is a readiness to acknowledge guilt! It is a willingness to accept blame for wrongdoing - to say, "I am the one, Lord. I have sinned!"
You see, if there is no admitting to sin, there can be no repentance:
"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of..." (2 Corinthians 7:10).
If you're not willing to acknowledge you're wrong, you're saying you don't need to repent. You see yourself as having done no wrong in the sight of God.
Before Pilate released Jesus into the hands of murderous priests and elders, he wanted the world to know it wasn't his fault. So he called for a basin of water, dipped his hands into it and absolved himself before the angry mob. He declared himself innocent of Christ's blood:
"When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it" (Matthew 27:24).
The phrase "See ye to it" here means, "Make sure you all know my hands are clean. I have done nothing wrong. I am clean from all guilt!"
Of course, Pilate's hands were not clean; he was about to hand over the Son of God to murderers. This kind of thinking shuts a person off from any possibility of repentance. Had a prophet approached Pilate the next day, preaching, "Repent or perish!" the ruler would have been aghast. "Who, me?" he'd have said. "I've done nothing wrong. I have washed my hands of everything. How can I repent when I haven't sinned?"
*******************************
Jimmy Swaggart did not, does not, have a “repentant heart” concerning his involvement with “the whores”. And to make up for it, he re-wrote God’s Word in order to protect himself from the sins thereof. Because this is what the “Jimmy Swaggart Expositor’s Study Bible” (JSESB) has to say about Brother Paul’s warning to any Christian who might be involved in “fornication” with “the whores” (King James Version is included for clarity):
“But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” (Ephesians 5:3-7 KJV)
“But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becomes Saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient (out of character): but rather giving of thanks. (The Believer’s protection against all these sins is the Cross of Christ, and the Cross alone. Keeping the Cross as the Object of one’s Faith guarantees Victory [Gal. 6:14], and for that we are ever to give thanks to God.) For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God (Paul is speaking to Believers! If the Cross is not the Object Faith for the Believer, but rather something else, these Passages plainly tell us such a Believer will actually come to the place of unbelief and lose his soul; the only answer for the “Law of sin and death” is the “the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” [Rom. 8:2]). Let no man deceive you with vain words (by trying to pull you away from the Cross): for because of these things cometh the Wrath of God upon the children of disobedience (the Cross alone stops the Wrath of God). Be not ye therefore partakers with them. (Never forsake the Cross, no matter how enticing the other things might look.)” (Ephesians 5:3-7 JSESB)
Jimmy Swaggart says that God’s not angry with him about “the whores”. And now please allow me to explain.
In our last sermonet – “Jimmy Swaggart, Take Up YOUR CROSS And Follow Jesus!” – we detailed the deadly consequences of Jimmy Swaggart’s JSESB teachings on “Cross Worship”. However, the preceding perversion from the JSESB only adds to what’s already been said. It takes it to a whole new level of insanity. Because not only is Jimmy Swaggart claiming “The Believer’s protection against all these sins is the Cross of Christ”, but he also makes amends for his un-repentant ways concerning his whores with the following: “the Cross alone stops the Wrath of God”.
Jimmy Swaggart and his un-repentant ways! But we’re just getting started! In fact Friday night in prayer, after having sought God’s direction on exposing Jimmy Swaggart’s “nakedness” with the whores, the Lord directed me to my “Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible”… the one I purchased back in the early 1980s. I still have it, use it daily, and would not give it up for a million bucks. It’s held together with shipping tape and Elmer’s glue, but written on the blank pages, in chronological order, is what God has spoken to me through His Scripture since January of 1998.
You see that particular “Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible” was, without a doubt, the Holy Bible – God’s Word. And as it concern’s the un-repentant Jimmy Swaggart and “his whores”, it’s that same Holy Bible’s that’s gonna put the bust on Jimmy Swaggart! Because as the Lord directed, this is what I found in the Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible in “Comments on Proverbs” at the beginning of the book of Proverbs:
“Warnings and Advice (chapter 5): A warning is given against marital infidelity, and marital loyalty is also praised. Advice is given for a man to love his wife.”
And then this is what I found as the sub title at the beginning of Proverbs chapter 5:
“Warnings against immorality”.
That was Jimmy Swaggart “then” (early 1980s), but the following Proverbs chapter 5 “sub title” is what you’ll find in his 2005 edition of the JSESB:
“WARNINGS AGAINST THE PURVEYORS OF FALSE DOCTRINE”
So what’s wrong with that picture? Well, as you are about to see, “a whore is no longer a whore” in the JSESB! But to start things off, let’s first check out the Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible in order to see “the whore” before Jimmy Swaggart changed her to “the purveyors of false doctrine”:
“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.” (Proverbs 5:1-23 JSSB-KJV)
That’s what “thus saith the Lord” on “the whore”! And this, in brief, is what Albert Barnes had to say about what God had to say about that same “whore” in chapter 5 of the book of Proverbs:
“The formula of a new counsel, introducing another warning against the besetting sin of youth Pro_2:16. The words describe with a terrible vividness the state of heart and soul which prostitution brings upon its victims; the reckless blindness that will not think, tottering on the abyss, yet loud in its defiant mirth, ignoring the dreadful future. The thought of this is to guard the young man against the sins that stain and mar it. The slave of lust sacrifices “years” that might have been peaceful and happy to one who is merciless. More bitter than slavery, poverty, disease, will be the bitterness of self-reproach, the hopeless remorse that worketh death. The conscience-stricken sinner had been “almost” given up to every form of evil in the sight of the whole assembly of fellow-townsmen; “almost,” therefore, condemned to the death which that assembly might inflict Lev_20:10; Deu_22:22. The public scandal of the sin is brought in as its last aggravating feature. The teacher seeks to counteract the evils of mere sensual passion chiefly by setting forth the true blessedness of which it is the counterfeit. The true wife is as a fountain of refreshment, where the weary soul may quench its thirst. Wedded love streams forth in blessing on all around, on children and on neighbors and ill the streets, precisely because the wife’s true love is given to the husband only. Emphasis is laid (see the Pro_2:16 note) upon the origin of the beguiler. The secret sin is open before the eyes of Yahweh. In the balance of His righteous judgment are weighed all human acts. The end of the sensual life: to “die without instruction,” life ended, but the discipline of life fruitless; to “go astray,” as if drunk with the greatness of his folly (the same word is used as for “ravished” in Pro_5:19, see marg.), even to the end.” (Albert Barnes’ Notes On The Bible)
Now, in the beginning, before Jimmy Swaggart partook of the forbidden fruit of “the whores”, Proverbs 5 meant exactly what God intended for it to mean to Jimmy Swaggart: “Don’t mess around with the whores… they’ll drag you into the lowest part of Hell!
But seeing how Jimmy Swaggart refused the godly counsel that would have kept him from sinning with “the whores”, and then continued on in his rebellious way by refusing to repent of his sins with “the whores”, it only makes sense that he would minimize his guilt by changing the meaning of God’s Word in Proverbs chapter 5. I mean, after all, “Proverbs chapter 5” is a picture perfect description of “Jimmy Swaggart and his whores”.
So, after having said all that, I now invite you to read Jimmy Swaggart’s perversion of Proverbs chapter 5… that is if you have a strong enough stomach to take it! (The words in italics are Jimmy Swaggart’s, not God's.):
“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding: That you may regard discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge. (Wisdom and understanding are distinct, one from the other. Understanding is the discrimination which recognizes Wisdom. A child, not having understanding, cannot discriminate between a glass ball and a diamond. So, to discern between the gaudy glass of folly and the simple beauty of Wisdom, understanding is needed.) For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on Hell. Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that you can not know them. (Wisdom [the Bible], the true Woman, pictures true Salvation; the strange woman [apostasy] is Wisdom’s enemy and rival. The teaching of the inspired Scriptures always has been, and is, unacceptable to man. False teaching [I Jn. 4:5] has been, and is, to him as the droppings of a honeycomb, but the honey is poisoned and ends in death.) Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. (Over and over again, warnings are given concerning departure from the Word of God.) Remove your way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house (Israel was forbidden even to look at false worship, and Wisdom warns against approaching idolatry’s door; obedience to this injunction will save Christians from being lured into apostasy): Lest you give your honour unto others, and your years unto the cruel (the physical suffering which follows upon vice is a fearful picture of the wreckage wrought in the soul by false religion): Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labours be in the house of a stranger; And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed (the problem of the Church is the “strange woman,” which speaks of false doctrine; as an example, modern psychology is the HIV of the modern Church), And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof (departure from God’s Word is quickly followed by enslavement to evil); And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them who instructed me! (Without fail, the Lord will provide a Godly voice. If we do not hear, we are without excuse [Rom. 1:20].) I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. (It seems strange that one would lose his way “in the midst of the congregation.” And yet, this is Satan’s greatest field of endeavor. Sadly, most lose their way in Church because of false doctrine that it taught from behind the pulpit.) Drink waters out of your own cistern, and running waters out of your own well. (The “cistern” here is the Bible. Years later, Jeremiah would refer to this very Passage [Jer. 2:13].) Let your fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. (It is insensible for man to turn from Wisdom to folly; from the Word of God to man-made religions.) Let them be only your own, and not strangers' with thee. (The word “strangers” once again refers to false doctrine, false apostles, and idol worship.) Let your fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. (Solomon is enjoining, as his father David enjoined him, to not forsake Jehovah, Who is responsible for all blessings. Regrettably, Solomon would not heed his own injunction. The God of Glory, Who touched him in his youth, would be forsaken in Solomon’s old age.) And why will you, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? (The Holy Spirit once again gives warning concerning the “strange woman” [false doctrine, false apostle, and idol worship].) For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his goings. (A record is kept by the Lord of every sparrow that falls to the ground, and every hair lost from the head of each person [Mat. 10:29-30].) His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. (The word “take” in Verse 22 means “entrap.” The statement, “cords of his sin,” refers to bondage. It is a bondage that a man, within himself, cannot break. It can be broken only by the Power of God through the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and our Faith in that Finished Work [Eph. 2:13-18; Gal. 2:20]. The gist of all this is that religion is the greatest entrapment of of all. Deliverance from religion can be effected only by the Power of the Holy Spirit, which functions on the basis of Christ and His Finished Work of the Cross [Rom. 6:3-5, 14; 8:1-2, 11].)” (Proverbs 5:1-23 JSESB)
Jimmy Swaggart: What a mess!!! But we’re not even through yet! Because this thing with “Jimmy Swaggart and the whores” is a whole lot more serious than most would want to believe. In fact this is what Leonard Ravenhill had to say about it:
– A Man Of God –
(Download MP3)
“What would Swaggart be if he hadn’t messed his life up? He might have been a new deliverer for this nation, but the Devil got him! And now he’s arrogant. He says, “It’s no business of yours!” They tell me when he said that two (2) weeks ago the audience stood up and clapped and gave him a standing ovation. He’s got thousands of people living in adultery and devilry, where they don’t care.”
So did you catch the import of that last line: “He’s got thousands of people living in adultery and devilry, where they don’t care.” Well, Leonard Ravenhill spoke God’s Truth concerning “Jimmy Swaggart and the whores”… and here’s how God dealt with such abominable behavior in the past:
“And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor. And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.” (Numbers 25:1-9 KJV)
Now with that in mind, please allow me to help you see the full-color picture of what Leonard Ravenhill had to say about “Jimmy Swaggart and the whores”: “He’s got thousands of people living in adultery and devilry, where they don’t care.”
You see the preceding Scripture gives the details of how the Moabite king (Balak – Satan’s right hand man) finally succeeded in his attempts to curse the nation of Israel… and he did it with the help of a whole lot of sexy Moabite and Midianite women (whores) who enticed a whole lot of Israelite men to have sex. And it was right about the time God Almighty started to turn things around, by removing a few of the whoremonger’s heads, that Satan made a power play by enlisting two of his finest to keep the orgy going.
Because you see the “Midianitish woman” and the “man of Israel”, who “in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel” openly rebelled against God Almighty by publicly engaging in their satanic sex act, were both of great influence to those that Satan was trying to influence. The “Midianitish woman” was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, who was head of one of the chief families in Midian. And the “man of Israel” was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of the tribe of Simeon.
So with all that in mind, can you now see Jimmy Swaggart on the altar of God as he openly engages in his rebellious sex act with Satan’s whores?
“He’s got thousands of people living in adultery and devilry, where they don’t care.”
This thing about “Jimmy Swaggart and the whores” is serious business… and God means business!!!
“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.”
So what’s it gonna take to turn Jimmy Swaggart around? Is it still possible to turn Jimmy Swaggart around?
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4 KJV)
“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled (lawful sex between a husband and wife holds no defilement): but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. (This proclaims all sexual conduct outside of marriage to be absolutely defiled.)” (Hebrews 13:4 JSESB)
Jimmy Swaggart the hypocrite!
Jimmy Swaggart has lost his mind!
“ Jimmy Swaggart Expositor's Study Bible: THE LIE From SATAN!”
Well that about wraps it up for this week’s sermonet. However, for those of you who might be interested in a further study of God’s Truth on Proverbs chapter 5, as it pertains to the original “Jimmy Swaggart Study Bible”, I’ve listed all the reference Scriptures below that were noted in the margin of my JSSB. The numbers preceding the Scriptures are the verses in Proverbs chapter 5 to which they apply. And, as you will see, these references are just further proof that “once upon a time” Jimmy Swaggart, with fear and trembling, considered “a whore to be a whore”.
Fornicators beware! Keep on keeping the faith in Jesus!!!
Love,
Dad (Bruce Hallman)
